Historical, cultural and particularly beautiful, the city of Lagos, Portugal, wins all the votes for a perfect holiday in the sun. A new Eden for travellers in search of postcard panoramas and astonishing discoveries, this charming city has not finished captivating hearts.
In the south-west of Portugal, on the magnificent coast of the Algavre region, Lagos sits by the waters of the Atlantic Ocean. A fortified city, it impresses by the richness of its history: founded in the 8th century BC, Lagos is rich in architecture bearing witness to the Phoenician period, but also Roman, Greek and Visigothic. To discover its most beautiful faces, opt for a walk in the old town: along its superb cobbled streets "à la portugaise", you will discover a large, impressive and admirably preserved built heritage. But what to see? As you stroll through downtown Lagos, you will notice its small shady streets and tree-lined squares where it is nice to stroll. The ramparts are a must to see, especially on the side of the Castelo dos Governadores. Pass under the majestic Arco da Vila, discover the Igreja do Carmo decorated with azulejos (Portuguese ceramic tiles) and yellow paintings, the Capela dos ossos (Chapel of the Bones), pass by the Infante Dom Henrique square to admire the Mercado dos Escravos, then head towards the Avenida dos Descobrimentos to find the Fort of Ponta Bandeira. Known to be one of the most beautiful buildings of this style in Algavre, this square fort built during the 17th century was once used to protect the town from privateers and pirates. Stroll through the colourful alleys, discover the splendid white houses, the municipal market, without forgetting the Sao Gonçalo Gate, the current witness of the old wall that protected the historical heart of the village. Give yourself a cultural break by visiting the Centro Ciência Viva in Lagos: this museum, housed in a former 18th century manor house, is totally dedicated to Portuguese discoveries, be they related to astronomy, shipbuilding, science, arts or cartography. Ideal to discover with the family, it surprises by the splendour of its decor and the views it offers over the city. A city full of secrets and things to see! Our advice? Keep your eyes open as you walk around Lagos, here and there you can see, if you look closely, stork nests perched high up in the monuments.
Lagos' other asset? His rib, how wonderful. For a beautiful overview of its reliefs, head for the Ponta da Piedade: renowned as one of the most beautiful places in the Algavre, this breathtaking spot is made up of high rock formations, arches, a huge staircase, cliffs and caves that you can visit. Accessible from the Ponta da Piedade lighthouse but also by sea from the Lagos marina, by boat or kayak, these amazing caves will undoubtedly be one of the most beautiful visits of your stay. If the panorama from the Ponta da Piedade is dazzling by day, we can only recommend that you discover it also at sunset to immortalize a perfect postcard of Lagos.
Well, Lagos wouldn't be Lagos without its beaches. Praia Dona Ana amidst the rocks, Camilo beach with its turquoise waters, or Praia des Estudentes and its amazing stone bridge are three of the most beautiful beaches in Lagos. Each one more wonderful than the other, they will be perfect for your snorkeling outings thanks to their transparent waters.
