In southern Spain, near Andalusia, the region (in the eponymous province) of Murcia has many assets. In addition to the sun and beaches, it offers you holidays rich in cultural and gastronomic discoveries.
With 315 days of sunshine per year, the Murcia region invites you above all to enjoy the joys of the sea. Bordered by the Mediterranean Sea, its Costa Cálida offers a succession of escarpments, isolated coves and beautiful fine sandy beaches. It is also distinguished by the presence of the Mar Menor, a vast 170 km² lagoon. Separated from the Mediterranean by a narrow fringe of land 22 kilometres long, the warm waters of this small inland sea have earned it the nickname "the largest swimming pool in the world". To enjoy it while having the opportunity to swim in Mediterranean waters, go to La Manga del Mar Menor, a real paradise located between the two seas.
After its fabulous coastline, take the time to enjoy the many other attractions of the Murcia region. In Cartagena, discover a city that has been part of history for over 3000 years. Admire the Roman theatre, one of the most important in Spain, the Punic wall, the Augusteum, the thermal baths and also Santa Laria la Vieja cathedral, which was founded in the 12th century. Then walk through the city centre and enjoy the splendid buildings of the early 20th century: Casa Cervantes, Palacio de Aguirre, Grand Hotel... Also visit the region's capital, Murcia, to see the magnificent cathedral, the episcopal palace, the royal casino, declared a historic monument, and the fabulous monastery of Santa Clara la Real.
In the hinterland of the Murcia region, two other cities are among the most important: Lorca for its Fortress of the Sun, its synagogue and its Jewish quarter, and Caravaca de la Cruz, the fifth holiest city in the world with its basilica sanctuary of the Holy and True Cross. If you want to enjoy an exceptional natural setting, for hiking, mountain biking or paragliding, go to the green and lush Sierra Espuña Regional Park, near Alhama de Murcia. But also discover the Ricote Valley, the Chícamo River and the erosions of Bolnuevo. During your escapades, take a few gourmet breaks to enjoy tapas, marinera, octopus à la plancha, caldero, Lorca sausages or tortada and yemas.
