For you, holidays are a clever mix of sun, fine sand and turquoise sea? How about packing your bags at Icod de los Vinos, a very attractive seaside resort in the northwest of Tenerife in the Canary Islands?
An idyllic destination known for its ideal living environment, this small town is above all known for its wine and its Dragonnier des Canaries, an 800-year-old giant tree in the shape of a parasol that you will find when you visit Parque Del Drago. A paradise for hikers thanks to the great variety of its landscapes, the municipality has many protected natural areas that you will love to discover: from the Cliffs of La Culata to the National Park of El Teide and the Natural Park of the Crown Forest, you will have plenty of choice to try to contemplate all the splendours of this green area. In addition to its natural treasures, the town centre reveals a charming village and a church worth a visit: built in a colonial style in the first half of the 16th century, the church of San Marcos is recognizable by the whiteness of its walls and its high palm trees. We recommend that you push its door to discover one of the city's symbols, a Mexican silver cross over 2 metres high. The historic centre of Icod de los Vinos is easy to visit on foot, with its streets dotted with hermitages and well-preserved houses. From Plaza de America to Plaza de Luis Léon Herta, via Calle del Buen Suceso, the 17th century Los Dolores chapel, Plaza de la Constitution (known for its fountain), the splendid Casa de los Caceres (18th century) and the former San Francisco convent (now the municipal library), you can admire all the architectural riches of the city.
Typically Spanish, the municipality has managed to preserve all the strength of its traditions over the years. As its name suggests, Icod de los "Vinos" is a wine-growing town. That is why new wine is celebrated here: here, as in other villages in Tenerife, this drink is celebrated with songs, dances, traditional music and tastings. You can also watch the very popular descent of Del Plano Street: from its heights, the young people sit on a greased wooden board and have fun running down the street to the cheers of the inhabitants and tourists.
In addition to visiting, Icod de los Vinos is worth a visit: Chestnuts, gofio, sweet potatoes, wine, braised meats, potatoes with mojo sauce, fish, artisan cheeses, watercress soups and other tapas will be served without delay!
Finally, how can we mention Icod de los Vinos without mentioning its paradisiacal beaches? If there is one not to be missed, it is undoubtedly the wonderful beach of San Marcos: known for its black volcanic sand, this family beach has all the assets for moments of idleness under the island sun. In the shape of a shell, it protects you from the strong waves and will allow you to enjoy beautiful swimming sessions in complete safety in absolutely magnificent turquoise water.
