Between Arles and Salon de Provence, just at the foot of the green hills of the Alpilles, Mouriès, France's leading olive-growing town, is the ideal place to settle down for a relaxing stay. Rich in a strong natural heritage and century-old traditions, Mouriès attracts a large number of sports enthusiasts every year thanks to its multiple hiking routes, breathtaking panoramas and peaceful atmosphere.
How can we not succumb to the many charms of the so sweet Mouriès? Characterized by its peaceful atmosphere and magnificent panoramas in the heart of the Vallée des Baux, Mouriès is surrounded by more than 80,000 feet of olive trees and three mills, making it the most olive oil-producing town in France. If you are visiting the region in November and December, you can see with your own eyes the olive harvest and the production of the oil, cold pressed in the traditional way. The hiking trail called "La Route des Oliviers" will allow you to discover the history and manufacture of this local treasure, from olive groves (such as the Mas de la Tapi) to presses, without forgetting numerous museums and shops where you can buy a few bottles of this nectar so characteristic of southern France. If, however, it is at the end of September that you choose to visit Mouriès, then the Festival of Green Olives and Primeur Oil will be for you the opportunity to celebrate and taste these delicious fruits.
Typical of the small villages of Provence, Mouriès is a place where it is pleasant to stroll, no matter what time of year it is. You will love its warm, relaxing atmosphere, perfect setting for a relaxing holiday. Don't miss its pretty plots, its Paul Révoil course and its shaded terraces where you can enjoy a glass of fresh rosé or pastis, while tasting local dishes such as tapenade, aniseed gibberish and ferns to the sound of singing cicadas. During August, you can also enjoy the aïoli of the votive festival, as well as delicious soups with pistou. Rich in many traditions, Mouriès is particularly famous for its Ribbon Festival in June. Thanks to its arenas that can accommodate up to 3000 people, the town is the scene of many bullfighting celebrations, shows and races, always preceded by parades of Arlesian women and folk dances.
There are many hiking routes that criss-cross Mouriès and its region: in addition to the "Route des Oliviers", the "Route des Vins" and the "Route des Maisons Nobles de la Vallée des Baux" are two unmissable routes for any gourmet holidaymaker curious to discover the riches of Mouriès. The first will take you from cellars to estates and shops to discover all the flavours of the local vineyards, while the second itinerary will allow you to marvel at the richness of the region's traditional residences, built between the 16th and 18th centuries. As you venture around the town, you will certainly cross the path of the oppidum of the Caisses de Jean-Jean: located on a plateau surrounded by steep cliffs to the north of the village, these protohistoric ruins made of fortifications and an acropolis attest to life in Mouriès well before the 7th century BC. Listed as a Historic Monument, this oppidum is accessible from the heart of the village via a 6 km marked trail for all levels. If, however, you prefer cycling excursions, then the circuit linking Roquemartine to Mouriès is for you. Before your eyes, during this walk, the fabulous spectacle of the cliffs of the Alpilles, with their changing colours according to the height of the sun in the sky, will take place. This 64-kilometre walk, which includes farmland, vineyards, olive groves, views of the Opies (the highest point in the Alpilles) and splendid buildings such as the Chapelle Sainte Sixtus and Notre Dame de Beauregard, is definitely worth a visit.
Finally, the municipality of Mouriès is also famous for its climbing sites, which are very popular with connoisseurs. The limestone crates of the Jean-Jean are a particularly privileged place for climbing, whether you are already an initiated climber or just curious. If, however, thrill sports are not your cup of tea, you can opt for horseback riding, golf at the superb Golf de Servannes, visits to neighbouring towns such as Arles or Salon-de-Provence, but also fishing at the magnificent pond of Entressen, swimming in the Mediterranean in less than 30 minutes, and many water sports, both at sea and on the Rhône.
