In the heart of one of the most beautiful bays in the world, Douarnenez is the perfect place for holidaymakers who love the sea. A city with three ports, it offers its visitors impressive contrasts, from its green coastal paths to its narrow streets steeped in history.
Intimate, friendly and yet wide open to the world, Douarnenez is a city to fall in love with. Inspiring artists for many years, like Eugène Boudin and Renoir, Douarnenez seduces its visitors with the splendour of its scenery. Take the time to stroll along its colourful façades, via its steep alleys, and follow the "Chemin de la Sardine" in the direction of the Port du Rosmeur. The latter, remarkable thanks to the bronze nails engraved with sardines and welded into the ground of the resort, will allow you to discover the city through several panels through its port history, directly linked to sardine fishing, a discipline in which Douarnenez has made its specialty. From the Gallo-Roman period to the fishermen's houses of the 19th century, passing through the craftsmen's workshops, the lively quays of its ports, the art galleries, the port of Tréboul, the port of Port Rhu (and its old rigging) and the fishing port of Rosmeur, the belvedere of Plomarc'h and the entire protected site, this 5 km long path will allow you to see everything that has made the history of Douarnenez. Note also that the Plomarc'h natural site is really worth a visit: between the sea and the trees, this Gallo-Roman site testifies to the major importance of the Breton city at the industrial level. Already, in ancient times, Douarnenez lived from the exploitation of the sea, since the town was known for its "garum", a typical local condiment made from fish juice.
Like Brittany, Douarnenez is crossed by a large number of hiking routes. The "Voie Verte", the GR38, the "Circuit de Sainte-Brigitte", the "Des Roches Blanches au Port Rhu", the Bois du Névet, the coastal paths of the GR34, the GR37 and the "Entre Terre et Mer" circuit (20 kilometres) will allow you to discover the main sites not to be missed at Douarnenez. If you like cycling, there too it could be that the seaside resort will satisfy all your desires. Which route to choose? The one on the "Sacred Road", the "Voie Verte", the "Boucle des Manoirs" and the coastal paths leading to the magnificent Pointe du Raz and its breathtaking panoramas (about forty kilometres) will be perfect for iodized and invigorating walks!
Don't miss out on a short excursion to Tristan Island: a real gem of a mere 7 hectares, this site protected by the Conservatoire du Littoral concentrates everything that is most beautiful in Douarnenez. Accessible at low tide, you will find abundant vegetation, moors, orchards, exotic gardens, as well as exceptional mansions, a princess' house and some remains of fortifications. We particularly recommend a visit to its lighthouse, from which the views of the island and the whole of Douarnenez are truly remarkable.
Finally, what makes Douarnenez so successful with holidaymakers is certainly its absolutely magnificent coastline. You will find many beaches, very popular for water sports: surfing, aquagym at sea, water walking, dinghy, windsurfing, catamaran, kayaking, cruises at sea, paddle, sea bed observation... So many things to do with family or friends, on Le Ris beach, Pors Cad beach, those of the Ladies, Saint-Jean, Porz Melenn or on the beautiful beach of Les Sables Blancs.
