A balcony village perched at an altitude of 300 metres, Éguilles is about ten kilometres from Aix en Provence. Authentic and full of character, this city with its breathtaking panoramas is a small paradise for stays in the countryside.
Éguilles is first of all a historic city: rich in a strong architectural heritage, it has many treasures to discover during your walks in the heart of its village. In the centre of the village, stands a castle: built in the 17th century by the Boyer d'Éguilles family, it now houses the town hall. If you have the chance to visit it, do not miss its panoramic view from its belvedere, which will allow you to contemplate very beautiful views of the Provençal countryside as far as the Etang de Berre located about thirty kilometres away. Walk through its narrow streets to discover the flowered squares, shaded streets and laundries that dot its neighbourhoods. Take a walk up the stairs, typical of the Provençal landscape, and discover the remains of a Romanesque church. From the village's high lookouts, you can marvel at the magnificence of the panoramas of Eels and its region. Visit the Domaine de Saint-Martin, located in the heart of a massif made up of olive groves, thick garrigues and fragrant pine forests, or the Parc de Fontlaure, a real bubble of fresh air and a green oasis that will delight holidaymakers seeking freshness during the hot summer months.
Hiking fans? The site of the Bories d'Éguilles is an essential part of your visit. Testimony of the rural architectural heritage of yesteryear, there are two bories of Eels. Made of stones from local soils, these bories are still in very good condition today: coiled in the middle of the village's wooded hills, they are a perfect walking site for all levels of walking and mountain bike excursions. 6 kilometres away, the perched village of Ventabren is worth a visit, as is its magnificent Roquefavour Aqueduct: built in the 19th century, it offers incomparable views of the surrounding pine forests, the Pays d'Aix and the Sainte-Victoire mountain. Salon-de-Provence is only thirty minutes from Eguilles by car, and is really worth a visit for its rich architecture and exotic panoramas. Just next to Eguilles, Aix-en-Provence is a must during your stay: the cultural capital of Provence, this city of water is also a wonderfully preserved city of Art and History. Its wide boulevards, architectural gems, picturesque charm and gastronomy make it a city very popular with epicureans. About thirty kilometres away, Marseille and its magnificent Calanques National Park will be perfect for relaxing on the fine sand, facing the turquoise waters of the Mediterranean.
Finally, it is impossible to stay in Éguilles without enjoying its generous gastronomy, with a special emphasis on local and gourmet flavours. Bouillabaisse, aïoli, pistou soup, Niçoise salad, Provençal stew, ratatouille, tian, crespéou, vegetable barigoule, bourride, calissons d'Aix and other dishes with virgin olive oil will delight the whole family!
