In the department of Charente-Maritime, only 13 kilometres north of the town of Rochefort, Fouras faces the sublime Île d'Aix. Fouras is a seaside resort known for being the land of the "Fort Boyard". Above all, Fouras is a family destination rich in sumptuous panoramas unfolding over the main treasures of the region which are the Ile d'Oléron, La Rochelle and l'Île de Ré. Nestled at the mouth of the Charente, the Fouras peninsula is a real little seaside and nautical paradise that stretches over 4 kilometres long. Planted with holm oaks and maritime pines, this city is adored by its visitors thanks to its 360 degree panoramas. Formerly a small fishing village, Fouras experienced its first hours of glory at the very end of the 19th century when the high society of Rochefort went there to enjoy its sea baths. This is how the rich "Belle Epoque" villas have flourished over time, visible along the promenade along the Fouras seafront but also on the side of its old station. You will also be able to observe sumptuous villas and castles on the shaded grounds of the Bois Vert, perfect place of stroll appreciated for its freshness and its beautiful points of view. Whether you are walking or cycling, you will also have to go to the Pointe de la Fumée, the oyster farming area of the peninsula. It is from this point that you can reach the island of Aix, a small wild paradise with many cycle paths. Fouras is a city of sea nourished by the richness of its waters and is an important mussel and oyster site. From the oyster shacks to the restaurants, you will appreciate the freshness of its seafood and fish just caught and immediately served in its best shops.
If it is a mythical site inseparable from the history of the Charente-Maritime, it is indeed Fort Boyard : built with the aim of protecting Rochefort, the Island of Aix and that of Oléron, this fort whose construction was relaunched in 1801 by Napoleon was only finished in 1857, whereas the progress of artillery made the building totally obsolete. After being abandoned, what some called the "useless fort" became a military prison and then a film and television star in France and throughout the world. Finally, more useless than some would have us believe, Fort Boyard, a real colossus of the seas 68 metres long, is today the most famous fort on the planet. If it is impossible to enter the fort, you can still opt for beautiful coursières around the latter, accessible by cruise boat, kayak, sailboat, paddle, motor boat, catamaran or boats from the three ports of Fouras and the surrounding seaside resorts : we assure you that the adventure is worth it ! Sunset lovers will be able to watch a dream sunset from their boat over the fort and the sea, for memories engraved forever.
Finally Fouras, it is also a perfect destination for idleness in a preserved natural setting, with for each beach a unique and exotic panorama. There are 5 Fouras beaches, which will allow young and old alike to make the most of this iodized stay. The "North Beach" facing Yves Bay and the small port of Fouras is only a few steps from the town centre: easy access, it is famous for its surfing and kitesurfing spot, very popular with snow sports enthusiasts. Further south, if the "Plage Vierge", more intimist, makes the happiness of the fans of fishing on foot, the "Plage Ouest" (or "Grande Plage") between Fort Vauban and the casino, is the busiest beach of the resort. Bordered by a large and beautiful pedestrian promenade, beach cabins and restaurants, it offers a splendid view over the fort, Île d'Aix and Île Madame. You can fly kites, windsurf and play in its seawater pool. In its extension is the "Plage Sud de la Coue" : bordered by trees, its almost poetic airs make this beach the ideal place for a picnic at nightfall. Finally, to the south of Fouras is the "Beach of Hope" : facing Île Madame, it is the wildest stretch of the commune. A paradise for windsurfers, it is also a popular spot for surfing and kitesurfing.
