In the middle of the Atlantic coast, famous for its superb beaches, is the seaside resort of Saint-Georges-de-Didonne. This commune of Charente-Maritime will please lovers of discoveries and holidays in the sun, in a very attractive natural setting.
Located not far from the Gironde and Royan estuaries, Saint-Georges-de-Didonne is ideally located on the coast and will allow hiking and cycling enthusiasts to discover numerous trails, which will lead them to La Tremblade, Île d'Oléron, La Rochelle and Île de Ré for the most enduring. No worries if you travel with little ones, you will find along the coast many activities to do with the family, such as visiting the Palmyre zoo (20 minutes away), or the Gironde Estuary Park.
On foot, by bike or by rosalie (the ideal means of transport for an afternoon of laughter), take the time to stroll through the maze of narrow streets of Saint-Georges-de-Didonne : you will discover chic neighbourhoods where Charentaise houses rub shoulders with cosy seaside villas. With its pedestrian streets, its concerts, its church classified Historic Monument, its night markets and its pretty squares, this commune is a place where it is good to live. From the old hotel "Le Suzac", take the path towards the cliffs : the walk is ideal to contemplate superb points of view on the ocean and the abundant vegetation. A real green lung of the region, the forest of Suzac overlooks the ocean and reveals wonderful hiking trails in the heart of the pine forest and green oaks. Pedal even further, on the other side of town, towards Pointe de Vallière : if this rocky promontory testifies to the past with the presence of German blockhouses, it will also allow you to discover unsuspected isolated coves, perfect for picnicking and admiring the sunset. If you still have some energy left after this journey, climb the 144 steps of the Saint-Georges Lighthouse : this limestone building was erected on the edge of a cliff, in the middle of a wild natural site. From its heights, a breathtaking panorama over the bay and the Gironde estuary will spread before your eyes.
Walk along the coastal path to breathe the fresh sea air. The alternation of long beaches and small coves makes it the ideal place for relaxing moments. The most sporty holidaymakers will appreciate the multitude of activities offered on the beaches of Saint-Georges : jet-sky, flyboard, hoverboard, char-à-voile, this seaside resort is definitely the ideal resort for those who would like to discover new sensations. On the "Grande Plage", 3 kilometres long, take the time to enjoy swimming with family or friends. You can also learn many water sports, such as sailing, kitesurfing, surfing, pedal boat and beach volleyball. Just as lively as the beach of Vallières, it contrasts with the calm of the beach of La Conche which borders the forest. Wilderness lovers will head a little further south towards the authentic and preserved Corniche Creek or Suzac Creek. If the beach of the port is the appointment of the amateurs of fishing, it is also a small peaceful cocoon, appreciated by the inhabitants, in which you will be able to rest at the foot of the lighthouse, far from the agitation of the big city.
Finally, after the effort, comes the comfort : after watching the sunset from a bench facing the sea, head to one of the many restaurants in the resort to taste local specialties. Oysters, Bordeaux wines, melons, fish and seafood will be there to delight your taste buds.
