A charming village renowned for its magnificent setting and its legendary softness of life, La Flotte en Ré is also the largest commune on the Ile de Ré. Ancient fishing village renowned for its beautiful architecture and medieval testimonies, it is the perfect place to settle down for a stay to discover all the treasures of the island.
Considered as one of the most beautiful villages in France, La Flotte is first of all the ideal place to stroll and discover the beauty of the Ile de Ré. Its narrow and old alleys lined with art galleries and small shops, its market with a medieval touch and its flowered houses are perfect for strolling. Dozens of cafés, restaurants and terraces are located here, contributing to the typical charm of La Flotte en Ré. Contemplate the beauty of the 18th century mansions along the Cours Félix Faure bordered by plane trees, take a stroll towards the church of Sainte Catherine for a quiet break and head towards the superb port of the town : take its small footbridge from where you can admire the boats moored in the port, then walk along the pier for a lovely panorama over the lighthouse. To avoid the world, whether you are walking or cycling, we advise you to get up at dawn to enjoy the tranquility of the place while enjoying the sweetness of an island sunrise. Some major buildings should be added to your holiday to-do list. First of all, you will have to visit the Abbaye des Châteliers : the oldest religious building on the Île de Ré, this former Cistercian monastery from the 12th century was in its time one of the largest abbeys in the region. You will be able to visit it or at least, what remains of it since the building did not resist the assaults of the English and the wars of religion. Second site not to be missed : the Prée fort. Built in 1625 on the eve of the siege of La Rochelle, it is the oldest military fort on the island. Formerly used as a royal fortification, today only the keep and the stranding port remain of the original building.
Known for its countless cycle paths, Île-de-Ré is a delight for many visitors each year who discover it in a few (good) pedal strokes. Through the wild moors, salt marshes, beaches, woods and typical villages, more than 110 kilometres of cycle paths will allow you to capture every secret of the island. More than 36 kilometres long, the "Circuit Vauban" will allow you to tour the Île de Ré via its most beautiful sites (Phare des Baleines, Rivedoux and its landscapes, Fort Vauban, Saint-Martin, salt marshes...) and panoramas on the turquoise sea.
If it is a must for La Flotte en Ré, it is its market. You will find glaciers, chocolatiers, crêperies, local pastries, but also grocers who will be delighted to make you taste the local flavours. Open every day, the La Fleotte market is also famous for its fish markets, its stalls filled with small local products, cheeses, jams and regional specialities. You will not be able to leave without tasting the oysters, salt, salicornes, goat, local wines, potatoes and countless organic fruits and vegetables produced directly on the island.
La Flotte en Ré is also one of the most beautiful beaches on the north coast of the island. Situated to the east of the village and bordered by a bucolic promenade, the "Plage de l'Arnerault" offers its visitors a beautiful and long stretch of sand at high tide. In the shade of the trees or on the fine sand of this beach of more than 500 meters, it will be possible for you to let you go to long parentheses to calm under the floating sun. Family picnics, swimming in crystal clear waters, reading breaks or sporting activities : there will be something for everyone, and you will necessarily find something to occupy your sunny afternoons. The station has a second beach, much smaller and covered with pebbles, on the side of the port : it is the "Plage de la Clavette". Much less frequented than the previous one, it will however make the happiness of the lovers of water sports. During your stay at La Flotte, you will be offered a wide range of activities : sailing, catamaran trips, canoe or sea kayak trips, windsurfing, stand up paddle and dinghy sailing. You will also have the opportunity to go on an excursion at sea off La Flotte, Saint-Martin, La Rochelle, Île d'Aix, Fort Boyard and Oléron.
