Quiet and residential, the 12th arrondissement is the second largest in Paris, after the 16th. It must be said that both of them go far beyond the peripheral limits of the capital with their respective woods. For the borough of Reuilly (another name of the 12th century), it is obviously the Bois de Vincennes. This large green space offers a very pleasant setting to stroll around but also to make beautiful discoveries. At the entrance to the park, on the Paris side, a former pavilion built for the 1931 Colonial Exhibition, the Palais de la Porte Dorée, has a beautiful Art Deco architecture. It now houses an immigration history museum and a tropical aquarium. Nearby, the Paris Zoo offers another place of change of scenery with its 1000 animals of 180 different species.
After visiting the zoo, continue your exploration of the Vincennes woods by enjoying its lakes, its Buddhist centre (beautiful pagoda and 9-metre golden Buddha statue), and its flower park. On more than 30 hectares, it has hundreds of different plants and a large playground that will delight children. Finally, take the time to enjoy the Château de Vincennes with its 14th century keep and 17th century royal pavilions. To reach the other districts of the 12th century while remaining "green", take the long planted walk which links, for nearly 5 kilometres, the Bois de Vincennes to the Place de la Bastille. This former train line, which has been converted into a pedestrian zone, offers a special view of the capital since it is located a few metres above ground level.
Along this walk, go down the stairs from time to time to discover interesting places. Take a break in Bercy where the old wine warehouses have given way to pretty flower gardens and the Saint-Émilion courtyard where you can eat, shop or go to the cinema. Also get off the promenade just before arriving in Bastille to enjoy the Viaduc des Arts, a collection of shops and very diverse craft workshops. Then make a detour to the Place d'Aligre, which houses the Beauvau covered market and which hosts, on Sundays, the famous Aligre market, one of the most famous (and cheapest) in Paris.
