On the border with Spain, in a wonderfully well-preserved natural setting, the village of Sorède (or Sureda in Catalan) is the perfect place for a holiday between sea and mountain, tradition and escape.
Situated 7 kilometres from the beaches of the seaside resort of Argelès-sur-Mer, Sorède, nicknamed the "Pearl of the Albères", is located between the Vallée Heureuse and the Vallée de Lavail, in a particularly pleasant natural environment that surprises as much as it seduces nature lovers. If the heart of the village is only 64 metres above sea level, its highest point is 1257 metres thanks to the peak of Néoulous, the highest point of the Albères massif separating the hexagon from its neighbour Spain. Land of escape, dynamic and cultural, the commune multiplies the routes of excursions, which will allow you a perfect discovery of the village and its Mediterranean landscapes. During your walks, you will inevitably come across the village church known for housing a splendid 18th century rosary: built in 1052 then rebuilt in the 14th century in a Gothic style before being modified once again in 1730, the church of Saint-Assiscle and Sainte-Victoire is really worth the detour for the beauty of its neo-Gothic furniture, its Romanesque capital and its stained glass windows. Push your visit to the 18th century hermitage Notre-Dame du Château d'Ultrera and to the ruins of the 8th century Château d'Ultrère; from these high plateaus, superb panoramas of the plain and the coast wetted by the azure waters of the Mediterranean await you. The Romanesque churches of Sainte-Marie-Madeleine de la Veda and Saint-Martin de Lavail will finally complete the inventory of the religious monuments of the village. Just next door, the remains of a solar oven from 1900 will add a touch of mystery to your visit, as this site is surrounded by legends. Also worth seeing? The magnificent sundial in Padre Himalaya Square! A monumental work, this 12-metre high sundial has the reputation of telling the time to the nearest second... So now is the time to take advantage of it to set your watches!
If sports enthusiasts like to hike, horseback ride or cycle along the Tour de la Massane, the Roc de les Mèdes or the Puig Neulos, without forgetting to venture along the trails that criss-cross the Réserve Naturelle Nationale de la Forêt de Massane, as a family, we highly recommend a visit to the Vallée des Tortues. A large animal park renowned for its thirty or so species of turtles, it is home to more than 500 turtles but also meerkats, marmosets, alpacas, chameleons, armadillos, pythons, peacocks, chickens, parakeets, geese and goats! In short, a great Noah's Ark that will not fail to amaze young and old alike.
After stopping in Port Vendres to discover the Madeloc Tower and in Collioure to visit the Fort Saint-Elme, direction the beaches of the Mediterranean! Located less than 10 kilometres from Sorède, the beaches of Argelès-sur-Mer, Collioure, Banyuls-sur-Mer or Port-Vendres will be perfect for your nautical moments under the sun. In addition to idleness and swimming, here, the activities of slips are queens! Kitesurfing, water skiing, sailing, paddling, scuba diving, surfing, jet-skiing, towed buoys and many more will complete your stay in the heart of the Eastern Pyrenees.
