Situated in the heart of the Hautes-Alpes, Briançon is a charming little town with a remarkable historical heritage, and at an altitude of 1326 meters it combines the charm of an alpine village with the dynamism of a tourist resort.
Briançon is above all a city of history. Its immense fortifications, composed both of ramparts framing the city and of military buildings, were realized by the illustrious Vauban. During the 18th century, the favorite military engineer of the Sun King built this defense complex, which protected the city and guarded the road to Italy. Many of these fortifications have been listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites since 2008. Do not miss the majestic forts that surround the city. At 1604 meters above sea level, the Fort du Randouillet overlooks the valley. Built between 1724 and 1734, it was intended to prevent any passage on the river Durance. A little further down, nestled on a plateau of the same name, the Fort of the Heads occupies a strategic position that assured the defense of a large part of the territory. It is the Bridge of Asfeld, built by the successors of Vauban, which connects this fort to Briançon. From its vertiginous height, adventurers in the soul will be able to fill up with thrills during a bungee jump over the Durance.
Briançon is also a city renowned for its many sports activities. It is the commune of origin of the "Diables Rouges", the ice hockey team which won the Coupe de France in 2014. The René-Froger rink has received numerous sporting events such as the World Figure Skating Championships In 2001 and 2004. Since 1990, Briançon is also a ski resort of the Serre-Chevalier domain. Created in 1941, the estate extends over 250 kilometers and offers a large number of sports. Its 103 ski slopes delight many vacationers each year. It is not only the ski enthusiasts who find their account. Dog sledding, snowshoeing, ice climbing... You can not miss the Déval'Bob, a great 4-kilometer sledge run through the larches. A good way for non-skiers to discover, in a magnificent setting, the joys of skiing safely ! In summer, the station of Briançon is still active. Mountain biking is particularly celebrated with many trails and structures specifically dedicated to its practice.
