Need a cultural break, off the beaten track? A holiday under the sun, and stopovers at the sea without having to suffer from the world and its swarming? Direction Nissan-lez-Enserune, 11 kilometres from Béziers, 15 kilometres from Narbonne, and only twenty minutes from the beaches of the Mediterranean.

Between the valleys of the Aude to the west and the Orb to the east, the small village of Nissan-lez-Enserune (also called Nissa d'Ausseruna in Occitan) is located in the department of Hérault, in the Occitan region. Typical destination of the region, Nissan of rather discreet appearance conceals in fact many historical treasures. Its origins would go back to... Prehistory! The region has indeed many testimonies of ancient occupation, on the side of the hill of Ensérune, and the villages of Fontfalcou and Parazols. Then, it was Antiquity that marked the village, before it took on the contours of a large medieval city in the Middle Ages. To see? The Oppidum d'Ensérune first of all, an ancient Gallic village among the most important, no doubt, in the Mediterranean South. Splendid testimony of a protohistoric village, established on a vast rocky promontory, it offers a crazy panorama of the wine plain below, the dried-up pond of Montady, the first foothills of the Montagne Noire, the Pyrenees and the sea. To the list of things to see, you can add the Saint-Christol chapel, the Notre-Dame-de-la-Miséricorde chapel, the Saint-Saturnin church, and the Plo, located in the heart of the village. A group of houses erected along narrow streets, the Plo bears witness to the ancient city that was Nissan-lez-Enserune in the Middle Ages. Of the fortifications that once surrounded the village, you will only be able to see nowadays the Clock Tower, built in front of the current town hall.

Elegant city, appreciated for its history and character, Nissan-lez-Enserune is also appreciated for its privileged geographical location. In no time at all, on foot, by bike or by car, you can reach some of the region's most emblematic destinations, such as Béziers, which is worth a visit for its splendid town centre, its locks on the Canal du Mili and its arenas, or Narbonne. Its covered market, its archbishops' palace, its museums, its Robine canal, its Saint-Just-et-Saint-Pasteur cathedral and its beaches are among the must-see places in the area. In addition to the beaches of Narbonne, those of Vendres and Valras-Plage will be absolutely perfect for your idleness under the sun. Ice cream tasting, sand castle contests, but also scuba diving, bodyboarding, sailing, lunches on the terrace or feet in the water, paddle, swimming and sunbathing sessions will complete your trip.
