Bordered by the Seine, the 1st district of Paris has an extraordinary heritage. And for good reason : it was undoubtedly one of the first inhabited districts of the Capital, first by the Gauls then by the Romans. Very quickly, thanks to the strategic position of the Ile de la Cité, it became a place of power. In 508, Clovis installed the capital of Gaul there and Robert II the Pious, son of Hugues Capet, built a first palace which remained, during four centuries, the residence of the kings of France. After many modifications, this monument became the Palais de la Cité, largely occupied today by the Palais de Justice de Paris.
As you walk the streets of the Ile de la Cité, you will discover the oldest remains of the old palace: the Conciergerie, the Tour de l'Horloge and also the Sainte-Chapelle. This 13th century royal building, a true jewel of Gothic art, was built by Saint-Louis to house Christ's crown of thorns. Then take the Pont-Neuf, which, as its name does not indicate, is the oldest bridge in Paris, to reach the right bank and discover one of the main historical monuments of Paris : the Louvre. Today transformed into a museum, the Louvre was also, during eight centuries, the residence of the kings of France. For his visit, plan several hours so much the museum conceals masterpieces dating from antiquity until the nineteenth century, like the Venus de Milo or the Mona Lisa.
Between two visits, you may want to rest a little? The 1st arrondissement is ideal for this thanks to its two large and beautiful gardens : the Tuileries, the oldest in Paris, and the Palais Royal where the famous (and controversial) columns of Buren appear. Under the arcades of the Royal Palace, you can also do a little shopping as you will discover, next to old art shops, recent fashion designer stores, rather trendy. If your shopping frenzy is not full, go to the Halles district where you will find a multitude of clothing shops but also many bars and restaurants... if you are hungry !
