Between the Grands Boulevards, the Grands Magasins, the Opéra and its beautiful covered passages, the 9th arrondissement of Paris conceals many treasures. Strongly refurbished during the Second Empire and under the impetus of Haussmann, it has a very 19th century cachet that gives it a special charm. The district's flagship monument is the Palais Garnier. Built in 1875 to offer a new Opera House in Paris, the palace is one of the most beautiful buildings of the Second Empire with its majestic façade decorated with sculptures. But the delight is even more complete inside : the Grand Escalier, the Grand Foyer and the ceiling hall decorated by Chagall are pure marvels of architecture where gold rubs shoulders with marble of all colours.
On the Place de l'Opéra, numerous cafés, such as the famous Café de la Paix, allow you to enjoy the lively atmosphere and prolong your moments of contemplation at the Palais Garnier. Shoppers will also be delighted, as the Opera district has fashion, perfume and jewellery shops... They will probably not resist the call of the department stores, located just behind the Opera. Even if you don't want to buy anything, go through the doors of Printemps and Galeries Lafayette to admire their splendid domes, the first from 1923 and the second from 1912. Nearby, discover the Fragrance-Fragonard Museum and the façade of the Olympia, the famous music hall.
To continue your visit of the 9th arrondissement, take the Grands Boulevards and imagine yourself in the 19th century, when they attracted society and literature. At 10 boulevard Montmartre, discover the Grévin museum, created in 1881 to present to Parisians the wax faces of the illustrious figures quoted in the newspapers. Discover also the small passages (Jouffroy, Verdeau, des Princes) which lead to the boulevards. Animated and luminous thanks to their beautiful skylights, they shelter unusual small shops and quiet cafés-restaurants. In the evening, you will have the embarrassment of the choice to go to eat but some addresses are really picturesque thanks to their decoration of time like Bouillon Chartier or Au Petit Riche.
