The 4th arrondissement is often considered as the heart of Paris since it houses the Town Hall but also one of the most emblematic monuments of the capital : Notre-Dame. Of course this mythical cathedral is an essential place. Completed around 1300, emblem of Gothic art, it was the scene of many historical events (crowning of kings, process of rehabilitation of Joan of Arc...) but also imaginary, as in the famous novel of the same name by Victor Hugo. Notre-Dame de Paris impresses with its imposing façade, its towers and its unusual gargoyles. After this unforgettable visit, reach Saint-Louis Island by crossing the bridge of the same name, pedestrian and offering pretty panoramas on the cathedral and on the banks of the Seine.
This artificial island, born from the union of two islets, is undoubtedly one of the most peaceful places in Paris. While strolling along the quays, you will discover beautiful mansions where famous people like Baudelaire or Chopin lived and you will be able to laze on the banks while watching the Seine flow. The main street of the island reserves a beautiful surprise for the gourmands : Berthillon, the legendary glacier of Paris which proposes all kinds of incredible perfumes. After this gentle break, take the Pont-Marie to join another surprising district: the Marais. At lunch or dinner time, take advantage of your presence in this district to eat oriental specialities in the rue des Rosiers. With its Jewish pastries and restaurants, this pleasant alley will delight your palates. To inspire your eyes and your spirit, finish your discovery of the 4th district by the Beaubourg district. Enjoy the Pompidou centre and its modernist architecture which houses the National Museum of Modern Art. On the program, one of the most beautiful collections of modern art in the world : Picasso, Kandinsky, Klee, Matisse, Soulages... Continue your walk by the Stravinsky fountain, decorated with moving and colorful sculptures and then by the Saint-Jacques Tower, former bell tower of a church demolished in 1797 which was reconverted into a meteorological station.
