On the banks of the Seine, on the left bank, the 5th arrondissement is often assimilated to the Latin Quarter. However, it also includes other pleasant districts such as Mouffetard, la Contrescarpe or the surroundings of the Jardin des plantes. Among the oldest districts of Paris, occupied by the Romans since the 1st century BC, it has an extraordinary heritage.
The Latin Quarter presents a contrasted aspect with its student and tourist public, its fast-food restaurants, its art cinemas, its fashion boutiques and its numerous historical monuments. Among these, do not miss La Sorbonne, founded in the 13th century, the Panthéon which was a church before welcoming the great figures of the Nation, the hotel and museum of Cluny, the Collège de France and the churches of Saint-Séverin and Saint-Étienne-du-Mont.
While visiting the Quartier Latin, do not hesitate to leave the main roads to take small more charming arteries like the rue Galande, lined with medieval houses, the rue de la Bûcherie or the rue de Lanneau with its 16th century houses. Discover also the peaceful rue Mouffetard, famous for its market and the small streets that lead to it. At the top of the street, the Place de la Contrescarpe offers, during the day, a quiet and pleasant setting and is transformed, at nightfall, into an extremely festive and student place, with its numerous terraces of cafés and restaurants. In the adjacent streets, you will find many other places of restoration, traditional or more exotic, but also quite tourist.
If you're looking for a green place, head to the Plant Garden. This park, inaugurated in 1635, was originally reserved for the cultivation of medicinal plants for the apothecaries of the royal house. But, very quickly, it is open to the public who could thus discover species coming from the whole world. Today, it still attracts children and adults who marvel at the Menagerie, in tropical greenhouses or in the rose garden. In the garden, do not hesitate to visit the National Museum of Natural History and, nearby, the Arab World Institute with its beautiful building made of glass and aluminum. After these beautiful visits, how about a mint tea in the beautiful Hispano-Moorish setting of the mosque of Paris ? You'll have a convivial, original and authentic moment.
