Royally developed in the 17th century, under the reigns of Louis XIII and Louis XIV, the 2nd arrondissement of Paris had its hour of glory in the 19th century when the stock exchange, the major newspapers and theatres settled there. Since then, a few theatres and magazine seats have survived and the neighbourhood is still very lively, thanks in particular to the Sentier, a centre for the textile and clothing trade. Start your discovery of the borough by going up Richelieu Street. You can admire many 17th and 18th century mansions, the Molière fountain and also the National Library, built by Mansart in 1645.
Near Richelieu Street, the Palais Brongniart deserves a little detour for its neoclassical style and its beautiful colonnades. Inaugurated in 1826, it was the Stock Exchange's headquarters until 1987. Continue your walk up to the Jean-sans-Peur Tower. Located in rue Etienne Marcel, it rises 23 metres and is the tallest medieval civil tower in Paris. Its spiral staircase ends under a flamboyant Gothic vault which is one of the masterpieces of French sculpture. Then immerse yourself in the incredible animation of the Path, in the streets and alleys located around the square of Cairo. This temple of the textile wholesale trade impresses by its incessant parades of handlers carrying large wardrobes loaded with dresses and costumes.
Another essential curiosity of the 2nd district is its network of covered passages (Choiseul, Vivienne, Colbert, Panoramas...). Built at the beginning of the 19th century, these crossings can be considered as the ancestors of pedestrian zones because they allowed visitors to shop without being disturbed by traffic. Surmounted by glass roofs, they conceal small picturesque shops but also cafés and restaurants. An ideal and peaceful place to take a little break! To eat, you can also go in the street Montorgueil where some breweries exist since more than two centuries as "Au Rocher de Cancale". If you want more exoticism, go to rue Saint-Anne, the Japanese district of Paris. You will find not only Japanese restaurants and grills but also grocery stores, bookshops and language schools.
