Lively and trendy, the 3rd arrondissement of Paris is also distinguished by its historical and cultural character. With its many monuments, its remarkable museums and its beautiful mansions, it offers a real delight for the eyes.
To the south, the Marais district, shared with the 4th arrondissement, is ideal for strolling, cultural activities and shopping. Start your walk with the Hôtel de Soubise-Clisson which houses the National Archives Museum. Built in the 14th century, it has a courtyard of honour and magnificent gardens. Next door, enjoy the hotel de Guénégaud, built by Mansart and the hotel de Mongelas, entirely restored. Then, while going towards the Picasso museum, admire the hotel of Rohan which sheltered, under Napoleon, the imperial Printing.
Nearby, three other museums are worth a visit : the Cognac-Jay museum, mainly devoted to 18th century art, the Carnavalet museum which traces the history of Paris since prehistoric times and the Museum of Jewish Art and History which allows visitors to familiarise themselves with Jewish culture. To reach these different places, take the rue des Francs-Bourgeois or the rue Vieille du Temple and take the opportunity to go shopping in the jewellery, fashion, perfumery or leather goods shops. If you wish to continue these window-shopping moments, go to the Temple district. This little corner of Paris, which owes its name to the religious order of the Templars, is full of art galleries, trendy fashion boutiques, design decoration and organic shops.
In front of the town hall of the 3rd arrondissement, go then to discover the site of the old Templar fortress, razed in 1808 but which is symbolized, on the ground, by blue lines. Just next door, the Temple Square offers you its large water basin and the shade of its horse chestnut trees for a few moments of relaxation. After this small pause, take your walk again to see the last curiosities of the district : the museum of Arts and Métiers which retraces the history of the technical inventions and the house of Nicolas Flamel, considered as the oldest house of Paris (1407). After these numerous visits, you will surely want to have a drink or to eat. Then go to rue de Bretagne and the many surrounding streets : you will necessarily find the place of your dreams !
