Which French town on the Atlantic coast is a well-known fishing, trading and pleasure port ? It is indeed La Rochelle, the town of south-west France located between the estuary of the Loire and the estuary of the Gironde. Protected by the islands of Ré and Oléron, La Rochelle is a prosperous city and an important place of world trade.
This is felt when you walk the streets of this millennial citadel. The medieval towers of the Old Port have become a great classic for postcard publishers, but there are many other well-known ones in the city center : the Saint-Nicolas tower, the Lanterne tower or the Chaîne... All have in common that they belonged to the fortified walls of La Rochelle, which was partially razed by Richelieu in the 17th century. Other periods have shaped the historic center, such as the Renaissance during which the Town Hall was built or the classic period to which one owes the building of the Chamber of Commerce.
La Rochelle is a destination renowned for the curists who like to frequent its swimming pools of sea water and its centers of thalassotherapy. This is not new since the seawater benefits were already being commercialized in the 18th century. Faced with the influx of swimmers and the departure of the military, beaches have gradually been developed to allow tourists to enjoy the seaside. This is the case of the beach of Concurrence, Minimes or That of Aytré who, at dusk, are flooded with a golden light and are ideally suited for walks as a lover or family. If you go to the beach of Minimes, you will probably have the chance to see the lighthouse at the end of the world, replica of another famous lighthouse located off Cape Horn and surprising by its unusual shape.

Visit the Island of Aix from the Pointe de la Fumée in Fouras. Reasonably priced boat to go on the island or to go around Fort Boyard at sea. You can swim on the Ile d'Aix, don't forget your swimsuit. Visit of two zoos, the one in La Palmyre located 80km from La Rochelle, and the one in Les Sables d'Olonne located about 100km away. The price of the zoos is attractive compared to those in IDF. Oysters and fried mussels can be tasted everywhere. Enjoy your stay

Port des Minimes : very nice walk on the seawall. We stay there for hours strolling, watching the boats. Ile d'Aix to do and Ile de Ré (obviously).

Aquarium to see, visit the Lantern Tower (next time we will visit the other 2). A beautiful, lively city with beautiful buildings and endless shops. Visit also Châtelaillon.

As far as I am concerned, the city of La Rochelle is not unknown to me and I would like to confirm to new holidaymakers that this city is magnificent and that the activities are diverse and permanent. Everything is nearby and everyone can find something to suit them.

There are plenty of good restaurants in La Rochelle. We visited the maritime museum (with its boat the meteorological frigate "France 1"), we took the maritime shuttle to the island of Oléron: you will see, the "Fort Boyard", the Old Port and the city are magnificent... Without a car, bicycles are the kings. Shops, restaurants, entertainment are on the agenda.
